Capping the day, however, was President Mary McAleese, who officially opened the championships, after a rousing performance by the Irish Air Corps Pipe Band. She said it was where the traditional Irish fair day the Aonach meets the most sophisticated modern business fair. But, she said, the art and science of ploughing is the heart of the championships, an activity that has been going on in Ireland for 5,000 years as the excavation of the C?ide fields in Mayo has shown. And that, as everybody knows, was long before there were any caps around in the guise of policy documents or even the cloth variety.

Billed as a birthday party for York’s residents and guests, the blockbuster parade was sweeping in scope. From the Shriners in their zooming midget cars, and the Jimmy Buffett fan club "Parrotheads," to the Irish Air Corps Pipe Band from Dublin, Ireland, and the Mad Bavarian Brass Band from Stark, N.H., the parade held something for everyone.

We made sure we were there for the Harpoon Irish Pipe & Drum Band. Members of the Irish Air Corps Pipe Band came right into Doyle's and stated playing their bagpipes and drums. They were wearing kilts too! Scroll down page for article......

Heritage Society in Roscrea Castle at 12.45p.m. There will be an exhibition of military weapons, UN Exhibition and recruiting stand in The Courtyard, Roscrea Castle. A recital by the Army No. 1 Band in the Courtyard of Roscrea Castle is due to commence at 1.10p.m and will be followed by a recital by an Air Corps Pipe Band.

The St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee awarded the band a trophy dedicated to the memory of Savannah's Irish Ambassador, the late Joseph O. Ransey.

Tim Steinhauser of Effingham County assisted the Irish Air Corps Bagpipe Band last spring when the group marched at the front of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah. A Gulfstream Aerospace employee and South Effingham High School Band Booster, Steinhauser also arranged for the group to visit the high school three days later where Band Commandant Niall O'Toole and other Irish bagpipers shared their music, songs and stories with members of the SEHS band.
